A cold weather homeless shelter in Sunnyvale has been in such high demand that county officials recently opened another haven in Mountain View for women and families.

The newest shelter opened on Dec. 23 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 748 Mercy St.

According to a press release from Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian, there is a waiting list of more than 300 people for the Santa Clara North County Winter Shelter in Sunnyvale and the newest shelter in Mountain View can accommodate some of those people.

The Sunnyvale winter shelter at 999 Hamlin Court opened on Oct. 16–six weeks earlier than the previous year–and is scheduled to close on April 15– two weeks later. The shelter has 125 beds and has been providing clients with showers, washers, dryers, dinners and a safe place for the night.
